Splash Pages – A Rant

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING IS DIRECTED AT WEB SNOBS, IF YOU’RE ONE OF THEM OR THINK YOU MIGHT BE, NOW’D BE THE TIME TO CLOSE THIS BROWSER WINDOW.

This is aimed at the newbies, the kids who’ve been online two years, MAYBE three, and feel that they’re experienced enough to tell everyone else how their sites should be maintained and laid out.

One of the worst examples of this is the debate over splash pages. The New Kids On The Web have deemed splash pages unessecary ( I do know that I can’t spell, lol ), and have made it no secret they want them GONE. I’ve heard all the arguments “It’s one more click for the websurfer”, “They don’t add to the site”, “anything that goes on the splash page should really go in a WWW section”. CRAM IT. Excuse, but in my day everyone had splash pages – they make your site look neater, if you know what you’re doing. No splash page can work…IF your site is a business or personal site. But a fansite? For the most part fan sites NEED splash pages, THE END. I’ve gone to sites before where I’d wished they had a splash page because the pop-ups, banners, graphics, media, ect. made the site impossible to view. And, no, your site doesn’t need to be overhauled in those cases so it’s viewable in firefox – we had to code and re-code about 6 dozen times for new explorer’s since 1998 and I just got used to MSIE a few years back. I’m lazy so suck it, lol.

But splash pages shouldn’t be pissing you all off, if you’re even lazier than I am and you can’t click a link? Shut the fuck up, YOU are the one with the problem. If you think other people need to make their sites suitable to your tastes? Once again, YOUR problem. You guys, to be honest, aren’t that great in the design department – I haven’t been to a decent fansite since the haydays of Dead Daisies, The Slayer Show and Dusk til Dawn. People don’t really care about their sites anymore, and the ones that set the bar are mostly gone.

So, to recap: 1. People can do what they like with their sites that THEY pay for, 2. Suck it, 3. You’re all hypocrites, 4. Suck it, lol.]]>
