My House Is Dying

2007 | Random, Rants

Sweet holy mother of cheese, does this house need repair. Still, after all the money that’s been wasted on it! It needs new roofing done, it needs new floors, we have to repair damaged plaster, re-seed the lawn, replace the screen doors and two windows, and pretty much every doorknob needs replacing. And the wiring! Don’t even get me started on the damn wiring! The laundry dryer loves to blow the fuses in the basement ( it’ll still tumble, but there’s no heat ), and about a week ago the fuse literally blew off the wall and, while it was barely replaceable, now the dryer is perminantly cold. Nice, eh?

The problem is my mom ‘fixed’ it at some point, since she seems to think she’s a jack of all trades, and she’s really not. She once decided to drywall the ceiling in the bathroom ( it’s still there, it’s horrible ), and our bathroom’s tiny – I’m talking 8×15 at very largest – which she thought could accomodate an entire slab of drywall. I spent two hours standing on, balancing on, even, the toilet lid with one foot, the sink counter with the other, trying to hold that damn drywall up while Laota screwed it into place. We had no idea what we were doing, this is when I was 16 and Laota was 14 – none of this was explained to us, in fact, my mom walked out of the room and when we were finished we found her sitting on the couch eating chips and watching TV, bitching about how hard she works. She’s like a freaking punchline, lol.

It would have been a lot easier for everyone involved if this had been in any way explained to us, I mean it’s not like we had a DoItYourself.com DVD to learn from – we had to just take our mom’s word for it, which was a bad idea. The DoItYourself DVD’s would have certainly helped, and while we didn’t really have the physical strength for what my mom wanted us to do, knowledge is power, and we would have at least known what was going on and how to approach our projects and improve the quality of our work while, hopefully, miminizing all of the many times we were hurt trying to complete her hair-brained projects, lol.
