The Web – Sexist?

This is going to sound weird, but it seems like the internet is getting really sexist all over again. I’ve seen many design sites recently that boast an ‘all male’ design team, as if having a woman on the team would somehow diminish the quality of design they produced, or having a woman would distract them from their duties, or having a woman is, in any way, a bad thing.

This really ticks me off because I had to deal with this crap when I started out, because to be honest, women weren’t thought of in the mid 1990s when people thought of web and graphic designers or programmers, so when it came to that kind of thing, if you were a woman you’d get a lot of, “Wow, you’re a girl?” and, in all likliness, you’d have to deal with the client going elsewhere.

In the past 15 years or so, women have really come a long way online and are now a perminant fixture in the WWW, but it seems like this stupid sexism is starting to rear it’s ugly head again, and that drives me nuts because basically it means that it doesn’t matter wtf we’ve accomplished in the last 15 years, we’re still not good enough to play a role in what seems to be considered a man’s world.

This is so stupid, because since the about 1994 or so, women have not only gained a foothold to work online, but we’ve become so numerous that in many cases women outnumber men, and let me tell you something, we do a damn good job. I’m so sick of this B.S., I even know people who are pro all liberal rights but if you’re pro women’s rights they treat it like, “Yeah, that’s not a real cause, why don’t you do something more productive? You sound like a broken record.” – because Odin knows that if they aren’t pro women’s rights, then well, women should just get on the ball and kiss their asses. I don’t think so.
