Dreaming of Vegas
2008 | Family
I’ve never been on one of those Las Vegas tours, but I’ve been out to Las Vegas tons of times and it’s got to be one of my favorite destinations. You know, my home is very much in California, and when you’re road-tripping out somewhere you know you’re almost to the coast when you start seeing all of those flamboyant Las Vegas hotel, slots and casino billboards just outside of Nevada. That’s when Hardee’s become Carl’s Jr., you start seeing Stucky’s and What-A-Burger again and the air gets dryer and dryer. It’s like going home again, and the stop in Vegas is mandatory.
My Grandmother was a Rockette back in the day, sort of a show girl all of her days and a nomadic Rom Nation girl like the rest of us, but Vegas was very much home to her. So much so that she was married in Circus Circus – twice! I remember the last time, when she married Grandpa George and we found out by getting a postcard with them standing in make-shift wedding garb by the midway, lol, it was awesome.
The last time we were in Vegas we didn’t get to stay that long, but the time before that saw us in repetitive hilarity of my stepdad actually driving *past* Vegas down the strip like four or five times, back and fourth, before he conceded that we were, in fact, in the right place ( wow, what navigational skills! ). hen he did the same thing with our crappy hotel, and to top it off we spent a half an hour following him around the lobby because he knew for sure where the pool was. This was 1998, so while we had the internet, we didn’t have the convenience of online travel guides like Trusted Tours & Attractions, so we didn’t get any good deals or find anything to do, really, other than get lost everywhere and gamble.
All in all it was fun, though we didn’t get to see anything cool like Madame Tussauds wax museum or gamble at all ( I was just 18 at the time ), but my sister and I did have a good time fending off guys who wanted to buy us drinks at Circus Circus when my parents abandon us there so they could play the slots, lol. Actually, if you’re planning a vacation to Las Vegas ( or just about anyone else ) you should check out the Trusted Travels eNewsletter. If you sign up before August 31, 2008 you could win yourself a free $150 Magellan’s Gift Certificate!
