Healthier Kids in 2009
2009 | Health
One of the biggest issues we’ve got in North America right now is the threat of childhood obesity, and epidemic that brought on by increased demands on a child’s time and energy, high fat and sugar diet and increasingly sedentary lifestyle – but that isn’t all of it. I think a lot of people assume that if someone is overweight it’s entirely because they eat too much and are lazy on top of it, but not only is that far from true it’s a very unhealthy thing to teach children when you could be teaching them to love activity. They should be learning to be fit and healthy and love it without damaging fragile self esteem.
That’s why SOGO Active is so important. They’re a not for profit group dedicated to getting kids active, motivated and ultimately healthier all over Canada – I think we could use a SOGO in the USA! They’re dedicated to kids health through physical activity socially, “for youth by youth”, in their community.
My only issue is that they seem to focus on the physical aspect, only, and I haven’t found much on the website ( which is adorable and inspired, by the way! ) that lets you know what their stance on emotional fitness is? It’s so important to focus on a child’s emotional development, especially if they’ve been overweight or are just dealing with insecurities.
Overall, this looks like a great program and I really wish we had something like this here!
