Google Street View Bringing Back Memories

I was waxing nostalgic, as Faith does from time to time, and I decided to play around in Google Maps and find the places that I’ve lived in or been to in my life, and I found something crazy and cool at the same time. Google Maps “Street View” has now partially mapped the town where I spent much of my childhood in the 80s, on and off, Bellingham, Washington. It hasn’t just mapped it, I can now go for a “drive” down streets I used to walk down with my mom and sister. See Cornwall Park where we used to play in the stream, swing on swings and pick berries during barbecues.

I got to see the Albertson’s strip mall thing on Northwest right across the street from the trailer park we lived in, which has apparently since been demolished and now it’s a part of the business district. But Morrie’s Drive-thru where we used to get hot dogs and burgers, and would sit and play with new toys on Easter, that’s still there as is the 7-11 we used to frequent with our Grandma when she needed a pack of Camels. I had my first fountain drink there, I have my first memories there. I haven’t seen some of these places, white trashy though they are, in 21 years (I’m 29, you do the math).

The biggest find for me was finding that the Denny’s that Grandma would bring us to when she babysat is not only still there, it looks exactly the way I remember it. I know these are every day places, but they mean the world to me, I think because after leaving Bellingham, even though we lived in poverty there, everything went to hell and the last good times of my life were spent in my mid pre-teen years when I wasn’t living in fear of an abusive stepfather and being practically held hostage in a one horse town with no way out. It’s like a little last gasp of freedom being revisited.

I think I’m going to like street view, and from time to time I’ll revisit that bit of freedom, those last happy years, here for my own amusement lol.
