Are You Green?
2009 | Family, Health, Home and Garden
I know, I know, “Green” is the newest buzzword and people are starting to get tired of hearing about it – I think that’s because most average people don’t know what’s expected of them, and if they did they’d be all too happy to help out Mother Earth any way they could.
I do my best to live with as small a carbon footprint as I can. I recycle as much as possible (which out here means reuse since recycling isn’t an option in this small a town), I buy organic and local whenever possible, and I spent all of ten dollars on 10 – count em, 10 – of those ‘green bag’ grocery bags you can get at almost any store these days. That’s my favorite purchase because, being reusers, Laota and I would save every single plastic grocery bag we brought home and re-use them for all sorts of jobs. Which means we had tons of them even though we’d reuse them for grocery shopping as much as we could (the small stores here don’t use paper, no idea why) – well since we got those green bags (it’s been over a year) we’ve actually brought home exactly 9 plastic shopping bags. 9! That’s all, that’s in an entire YEAR.
One of the big issues of the day is that people just haven’t been brought up to live environmentally friendly, and it’s hard for them to adjust, especially busy people and older people. And we really need to adjust and help the next generation adjust by raising ‘green’ kids. Kids who love the planet would be ideal, but shooting for kids who know how to conserve, who know how to reuse and recycle. Those kids will make the future brighter.
And there are so many ways of doing this. You can buy some organic gardening products from Safer®Brand and help your kids grow up learning to love organic produce, learning to love to garden or just appreciate am more organic lifestyle. This isn’t just a fun, relaxing pastime, it’s also good for the plant. Think about it – grow your own veggies and you’re not supporting pesticides, there’s no transportation across country like store bought produce and they’re guaranteed to be organic.
We grow tomatoes in our window during warmer weather and, looking at Safer®Brand’s organic tomato growing kit makes me want to try to expand our little ‘greenhouse’!
