Watch And Learn: Fun Recipe Videos!
2009 | Family, Food, Friends, ZEN
I’ve been to iVillage several times, but to be honest I didn’t know what to make of it because it’s got so much information that I actually get lost! Everything from thoughts on the newest Bridget Jones movie to a dissection of bad boy baby names, it can be a confusing place sometimes.
But I’ve just found out about a spot on iVillage that seems like it’s created just for me. Yes, you guessed it, it’s about food.
As someone who’s relatively poor, I can tell you that on more than one occasion we’ve had nothing but a sack of rice (if that) in tupperware on top of our fridge to last us a week or two at a time. In fact, as we speak we’re down to half a bag of rice, half a bag of flour, one piece of chicken and a head of cabbage (sounds sparse but that’ll make chicken gyoza and fried rice for a good long time) in our kitchen to last us until next Tuesday. Because of this, I think, I’m a bit more in love with food than I should be, because it’s rarely ever something I can afford to treat myself with – only the basics.
So I don’t get to dress my food up too much, usually I try to make it pretty in my bento but there’s only so much you can do with plain white Calrose. But I love to read recipes and cookbooks, and I love to watch cooking videos which is exactly what they’ve got going on over at iVillage!
I’m watching a video right now on the subject of Sirloin with Homemade Steak Sauce and Cauliflower Puree, which is driving me crazy with how tasty it looks and how very easy it seems to be to prepare. I’m not sure if I can get behind this cauliflower puree thing, I think I’d have to taste it, but promise me sirloin and I’ll follow you anywhere!
I haven’t seen Top Chef since it’s first season, since I really don’t enjoy reality television, but one of it’s contestants – working mother Ariane Duarte – is actually in a few of these videos, which is extremely cool. A bit of star power in a cooking video never hurts! (She may want to consider Food Network, I think she could pull off her own show!) You Can See More Life Made Easy Videos Here
The food is pretty much all from Walmart, since they’ve sponsored the videos, and because of that it’s inexpensive to make everything from many of their steak dinners to something as pricey-looking as an ice cream cake. In fact most of what you see in the videos is available at Walmart. Unfortunately we don’t have the option of a Walmart, which I think would solve a lot of these food issues.
On thing I’d like to see some of in cooking videos is preparation of simple dim sum, because it’s one of those things where if you haven’t done it before it would be great to see it done as well as hear the instruction. It can get confusing otherwise!
