Webhosting Bandits: Live and Learn vs. Avoiding Disaster
2009 | Blogging, Business, Money, Safety, Updates, Work
Okay, why don’t people listen to anything I say? Especially when it comes to web hosting, a business I’ve worked in since the late 1990s? I’m not the be all, end all of web hosting knowledge but I do know that unlimited space isn’t a realistic thing to advertise for $0.99 a month.
What am I griping about? Well, against my better judgement my friend went with an webhosting company that sounded too good to be true – and it was. The guy had hosting for I think 2 or 3 months, then the owner of the company took all of the clients money (and domains!) and ran. Apparently he’s wanted in Canada for this very thing – I didn’t even know there were web hosting bandits! Shows what I know, doesn’t it?
I wish my friend had gone to Web Hosting Geeks or something, because on the internet, when you’re not working with a big name company you have to rely on word of mouth to make sure your new webhosting company isn’t going to rip you off and run with your hard earned money. I’m a big advocate of Web Hosting Geeks, I think they’ve got a great service there, and I’d recommend them to anyone who doen’t want to be taken for a ride. Plus you get to benefit from their knowledge on everything from web hosting, to CMS, to Frontpage and beyond on their blog so you can’t lose with these guys. I’ve blogged about them before, I’ve used them several times in the past and I really recommend them. That’s not something I say lightly or throw around, either.
This is just so ridiculous, though, because it was avoidable and I told him flat out that what he was being offered was unrealistic (like free hosting with no ads and no catch), and if he’d just used a host rating and review service he may have been spared losing his domains and money. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
