Holy Rainy Season, Batman!

Wow did we have a crap night! Not only did the rest of our housemates leave this house filthy when they left (they expect it picked up – guess who does the picking?), but they also pushed for so many odd things that we had just the right conditions for a disaster.

1. (Note: Names changed to protect the stupid.) Ben and Jerry (The Boy) decided it was way too hot up here (it was!), and they also decided to put an air conditioner into the window in OUR room. Okay, fine. Well the damn think leaks – not a *little* bit, I mean it pours. It poured about a liter of condensation onto the floor and messed up the varnish before we realized it was doing that. Well, they tell us it’s fine, just keep it off until they fix it but do NOT take it out of the window – so we don’t. First act of violence.

2. Ben wants to keep the finish on the floor shiny, and to do that he wants to put a huge filthy throw rug (dog hair, dirt, stink) under our beds which at this point are just our mattresses on the floor. This we say NO to, sorry but no. After half an hour of arguing why, he finally gives in and we get our way – bare floors, thank the gods!

3. With both of our beds in this room plus it’s size divided by it’s windows and doors, there’s only one place to store our uhaul boxes until we can unpack. Well, Ben decides that even though all of Ben and Mom’s bs is being stored in the carriage house, our antique jazz age dresser is taking up space out there so they want it moved into our room before we can unpack – fine. Well the only place for the boxes now is in a big pile in front of the window with the air conditioner. I bet you can see this coming a mile away?

4. They decide to take a quick trip to Kansas City to pick up some antiques, and mom wants Laota and I to come with them just to ‘get out of the house’. We say no, we have to clean their mess and we have to work, do laundry, etc. and we can’t just go out on a 2 hour road trip to screw around. All we need from them is to bring back cookie ingredients (will post about that later!), so they finally agree and go without us.

5. Well they’re gone, we’re doing laundry and a massive t-storm hits town, 15-30 mph winds sayeth weather.com, and rain coming down in sheets. About a half hour into the storm I hear a dripping, and Laota and I think at first that it’s the sound of the rain outside but we decide to check anyway – and low and behold, that stupid air conditioner is dumping 4 or 5 gallons of rain water into our room (maybe a bit more), flooding the floor and all our uhaul boxes! That means our clothes, electronics, books, dvds – everything.

We hightail it and get everything moved to the other side of the room just in time (only one box was damaged from what we can tell) and save our possessions. Now we have to get the still leaking air conditioner into another room and get up all the water it spilled on the floor, which reached Laota and my mattresses and got underneath Laotas. We do it, we get the crappy window to stop leaking with garbage bags and towels and everything’s fine!

However, if things had gone differently? This would have been a perfect storm, in more ways than one. If we had just gone with them to Kansas City not only would we have lost of the possessions and clothes that were in those boxes, but we would also have another issue. The water got to our mattresses, if we’d had that awful rug down it would’ve sucked the water up like a sponge and spread it around to the parts of the room it couldn’t get to before, possibly ruining our beds, our antiques and our laptops. Being stubborn, we changed ‘history’ just enough to keep ourselves safe and avoided disaster. Yet another reason to not just go along to get along!
